Curcumin improved normal aging-related memory impairment

The Flowering plant Curcuma longa, also called curcumin, is one of the most widely used medicinal plants belonging to the ginger family. The roots of this plant are ground up to a bright yellow powder used for cooking and coloring.

The main bioactive molecule found in turmeric is curcumin that has a wide range of pharmacological activities. A recent study in 2022 by an international team of scientists from USA, Canada, UAE and Bangladesh have shown that curcumin exert significant anti-aging effects on the brain. The research specifically showed that curcumin improved retention and freezing memory in aging mice, and that is significantly decreased oxidative stress biomarkers.

The authors speculate that the anti-aging effects of curcumin are likely to be due to the activation of antioxidant factors. The study is significant and highlights the usefulness of turmeric and curcumin in aging-management. Declining memory is a common characteristic of aging that can severely impact quality of life.
